Packington Duck Races

It’s that time of year again, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, or are they ducks quacking? The annual spectacular that is the Packington Duck Race returns once again this bank holiday Monday, 27th August, at 6pm. Tickets are available from members of the village hall committee, £1 buys you one entry to one of the three races – no need to bring your own duck!

Or why not enter the customised duck race? Bring along your own creation and race it down Gilawiskaw Brook to see if you can beat the others to the end!

As well as the races there will also be a barbecue (weather permitting) offering hot food and soft drinks, so lets hope the stunning weather we’re enjoying holds out!

Extension Work Begins

This week has seen the start of work on a new extension to the existing hall building, this will create a storage area where equipment may be safely & securely kept for a number of the regular events that takes place in the hall. The building work is scheduled to take until the end of August.

Packington Egg Roll – Easter Sunday

Just a reminder that, subject to it not raining (or snowing), the annual Packington egg roll will be happening this Easter Sunday, 1st April.

Participants are to meet at top of Mill Street ready to commence at 3.30pm prompt.

We will start with best decorated egg then the following races:

  • Preschool Children – boys and girls
  • Key Stage 1 Children – boys and girls
  • Key Stage 2 Children – boys and girls
  • Ladies’ Race
  • Gentlemen’s Race
  • All Comers – people who have intact eggs left from races above 

Prizes for each category will be given out after the last race. There is no charge to enter but the prizes have kindly been donated by Packington Youth Club so we will have a donation bucket going round – please bring some change give generously!

Ballet Class Cancellation

Please be advised that due to the inclement weather conditions the adult ballet class scheduled for 4-5 this afternoon (27/02/2018) has been cancelled.

Classes will resume as normal from Tuesday 6th March.

Big Packington Charity Breakfast – Saturday 3rd March 2018

Big Breakfast 2018 – Major Village Event

Saturday 3rd March 2018 – 9am to 1pm

Come along to Venue 175 – the larger of the Packington Memorial Hall Venues – and enjoy the “Packington Breakfast”.

  • Choice of all your favourite ingredients £ 7
  • Children’s version, and filled baps, also available £ 3.50

This event offers opportunities to many willing volunteers. Amazing camaraderie is on offer, not to mention banter and joy. You can join the team by offering a one- or two-hour slot.

  • cooking
  • making toast
  • serving tea
  • washing up
  • administration

– to mention just a few.

This year the proceeds will be split between:

  • Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance, and
  • Harry’s Fund.

Table-Tennis Club – “Aerobic Chess” – at PMHV Venue 175

The Packington Table Tennis club continues to progress and has just started its 3rd calendar year !

We started back after Christmas on Wednesday 3rd Jan 2018 with the plan to run through every Wednesday until 11th July at the Memorial Hall.
The autumn session will then start on September 5th until Christmas.
 
Numbers vary between 10 and 24 which means the 4 tables are always in use for either singles or doubles. There is always a warm welcome for all levels of player from beginner to advanced. The cost remains frozen for a 3rd year at £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per junior
A recent article from Renowned physician, psychiatrist and brain imaging expert, Dr Daniel Amen, says that ‘Table Tennis is The World’s Best Brain Sport!
The following was what Dr Amen had to say about table tennis:

‘You still may think that calling table tennis a sport is silly, but I think it is the best brain sport ever. It is highly aerobic, uses both the upper and lower body, is great for eye hand coordination and reflexes, and causes you to use many different areas of the brain at once as you are tracking the ball, planning shots and strategies, and figuring out spins.

“It is like aerobic chess”. Table tennis, or Ping Pong, is the second most popular organized sport in the world. What is even more impressive is that it is the youngest of the world’s major sports. At the competitive level, players hit the ball in excess of 90 miles per hour across the table!’

Ward off Alzheimer’s and assist in the treatment of Dementia!

Numerous studies have found that table tennis activates various areas of the brain simultaneously. By playing a game of table tennis, under any conditions, an overall state of awareness is stimulated – requiring both thought and physical alertness at the same time.

It has been also discovered that people in otherwise sedentary states – i.e., living in retirement homes and care facilities where table tennis tables have been introduced, have actually become mentally awakened when playing the game. Incredibly, the game is now being recommended as a method of warding off Alzheimer’s and for assisting in the treatment of dementia.

Most notably, Dr Daniel Amen specifically points out that table tennis:

  • Increases concentration and alertness
  • Stimulates brain function
  • Develops tactical thinking skills
  • Develops hand / eye coordination
  • Provides aerobic exercise
  • Provides social and recreational interaction

New Venue Opportunity in Central England

Looking for a venue to hold your conference, lecture, social function or other event?  Two modern venue opportunities are available in central England,  at satnav / postcode LE65  1WJ.

With full conference facilities for catering, licensed bar, stage or dance-floor use, seating, tables, audio-visual presentations with full broadband internet access, these two venues have attracted major local interest, but are available for YOU.

Venue 35 comfortably seats 20 people at tables or desks, but 35 people seated for talks and tutorials.

Venue 175: accommodates 120 people with tables and the stage or floor area, and is licenced for 150-175 people closely seated for a public meeting or lecture. The sectional stage can be formatted as required or removed completely.

There is on-site parking, 14 spaces, with nearby FREE public car-park available.

The clean, modern, well-insulated building has been fully rebuilt to a high standard. The large well-equipped kitchen includes an 8-burner cooker and commercial dishwasher.
